Initially, 1D beam elements were used in our experiment to hold the pleats in deployment model and 1D beam elements were assigned with MAT TYPE 121 – Nonlinear 1DOF Discrete Beam material. This method is not suitable since the 1D beam elements would stretch even when the stiffness value in the material card was increased.
Later, 1D beam elements were replaced by Nodal Rigid Body (NRB) to hold the pleats. NRB does not deform, and at the same time, it has a rigid body motion, which prevents deformation.
The initial bag which was used to demonstrate this idea had an unrealistic volume. To achieve the optimal bag volume, many trails were performed by scaling the bag elements.
The location of the pleat segment was chosen consciously towards windshield side, so that the pleats does not interact with the occupant’s face during deployment.
