Laying the foundations
for a digital twin
The first stage in digital twinning is creating a virtual model of the real-world entity by importing accurate physical characteristics from CAD or FEA models. However, as the twin is created from abstract models, the real-world asset itself oesn’t need to physically exist.
Once the model has been created it is essential to add context, via the application of historical data, including operational, functional and performance statistics. In pre-production instances, where the physical asset has not been built, extensive scenario modelling can be carried out before any capital investment is made, saving both time and effort.
For ongoing monitoring and management of real-world assets, a digital twin truly comes to life when it is connected to real-time data from the physical environment.
