IMDs can improve the quality of life of patients and, in some cases, play an important role in keeping them alive. The new generations of IMDs are increasingly incorporating more computing and communication capabilities.
Looking even further ahead, active IMDs open the door to other types of devices to improve human abilities, such as memory or perception, or even integrate our physiology with silicon-based components to improve biological functions. Cybersecurity experts have to be ready to adapt and incorporate solutions for this new setting at the design phases, avoiding the develop-then-patch approach that has often resulted in significant challenges.
IMDs will continue to reach new levels of functionality and could soon become as ubiquitous as over-the-counter pharmaceuticals.
