Time is of essence in product design and development in industries. Designing a new product involves many repetitive manual tasks which are highly time consuming. There is, therefore, room for using Artificial Intelligence in making these tasks more efficient, especially with regards to engineering drawings.
These drawings are used in designing mechanical components as shown in Fig 1, pipeline and instrumentation solutions and building layouts.
In the aerospace and automotive industries, most of its mechanical design components are legacy driven. These legacy components are quite old and stored in form of paper drawings. These paper drawings over a period develop various artifacts and become quite noisy. The companies therefore need a lot of skilled human effort and financial resources to get these legacy designs digitized.

In Processing Industries, engineering drawings are mostly non-legacy artifacts, but there is a requirement to provide a smart tool that can quickly locate different engineering components such as valves, compressors, etc. in the diagrams. Currently, manual tracing process is the only way used to digitize these drawings using software like CATIA, AutoCAD etc. This process is quite time consuming and needs skilled manpower to draw and visualize it accurately for inspections.
Hence, digitization using AI-assistance can be leveraged to convert these drawings into a format which can be handled by the CAD tools. This solution can cover a wide variety of industries such as aerospace, automotive, construction, manufacturing, medical and Hi-Tech, among others. To build the solution, knowledge of engineering drawings and adequate domain understanding with high precision is required. This smart solution should exhibit commanding nature over the traditional/ manual method as illustrated in Fig2.
